Design and Conversion
The Yas began life as the Royal Netherlands Navy frigate HNLMS Piet Hein (F811) before being purchased and extensively rebuilt by Abu Dhabi MAR. Its transformation involved replacing the original steel superstructure with a sleek composite and glass form, designed by Pierrejean Design Studio. The yacht’s silhouette features flowing, aerodynamic lines reminiscent of a dolphin.
Features and Amenities
Inside, Yas accommodates around 60 guests and a large crew, with lavish interiors characterized by curved glass walls and panoramic lounges. Facilities reportedly include swimming pools, helipad access, and advanced entertainment systems, all tailored to luxury charter standards though the yacht is privately owned.
Performance and Engineering
Retaining its naval hull gives Yas exceptional speed and stability for a yacht of its size. Twin diesel engines allow it to cruise comfortably above 20 knots, while its composite structure reduces overall weight and enhances fuel efficiency.
Significance
Yas stands out as a symbol of Gulf-region yacht innovation, merging military engineering with high-end luxury. Its conversion from a warship to a superyacht represents both a technical achievement and a distinctive design statement within the world’s megayacht fleet.
